What is combustion?
Combustion is the burning of a fuel in the presence of oxygen.
In the combustion of fossil fuels oxygen gas is used and carbon dioxide gas produced.
Science Teacher demonstration only
Hydrocarbons are highly flammable and can cause serious burns. Keep the bottle of methanol well away from all sources of ignition. Burning methanol is also difficult to see in bright sun light because of the light blue flame. The teacher must perform a risk assessment of this experiment.
20mL of methanol is added to the water cooler bottle.
For additional effect add boric acid to the methanol. This produces a green flame.
The structure of methanol is
Word equation: Methanol + oxygen → Carbon dioxide + water
Balanced equation: 2CH3OH(l) + 3O2(g) → 2CO2(g) + 4H2O(l)

Isopropyl alcohol is also called propan-2-ol
